After three weeks, my parents moved from the Garbačiauskas’s farm to the Vaškys together with me. Augustas and Klara Vaškys’ were young people: Augustas - 28 years old, Klara 24 years old. They were good friends of Andrejus Kalendra. In December 1943, my parents tried to take me by sledge to the Plekavičius’ family, who lived in Šakyna, but I cried so loudly that they decided it was too dangerous to continue the journey and we returned to the Vaškys’. I stayed with Vaškys’ until the end of 1943. As far as I know, my parents stayed with the Vaškys’ from November 1943 until the end of the war.

On July 29, 1945, Klara and Augusta Vaškys’ were killed by the Russians, their house was burned to the ground, only their one-year-old son, who was raised by Augusta's sister Zelma Vaškytė, survived.

At the end of 1943, Zelma Vaškytė took me to her farm. Zelma, who was 35 years old at the time, lived with her mother. I was presented to strangers as a refugee from Latvia because Zelma herself was of Latvian origin. My father had ordered me to address him in Latvian if I met him at Zelma's. I almost cut off my thumb once while chopping firewood at Zelma's. Zelma informed my mother, she came from Vaškys, wrapped a piece of material around my thumb. Eventually, the finger healed, although the scar remains to this day.

I lived with Zelma Vaškytė until July or August 1944.

After the war, Zelma was exiled to Siberia, where she spent 10 years. After returning, she settled with Morta Kalendraitė, and lived there until her death.
