Doctor Matlida and officer Antanas Zubrys were approached by their acquaintance doctor Fruma Gurvich, who managed to hide her two daughters Eta (12 years old) and Bella (16 years old) and her niece Noemi (5 years old) under her care during children’s Aktion in the Kaunas ghetto. Fruma had already found shelter for Noemi, and the Zubrys agreed to accept Eta. From the memoirs of Fruma Gurvich in the book "Soldiers without weapons" in 1967. "I had already visited her [Zubrienė] a couple of times, but I couldn't find her at home. I try my luck again. Successfully this time. For the rest of my life, I will never forget how Dr. M. Zubrienė and her husband (now deceased) welcomed me. How they calmed me down and even scolded me in a fatherly way, why I didn't go to them in the first place. And again I do not believe my ears: they agree to take one of my daughters, promising to settle her in the village as a shepherdess. I warn them again that my daughters are brunettes and they are easy to recognize. To this I was answered: "Is it their fault that their hair is black?" How nice to hear these warm words. How much they gave me hope and confidence in a person!"
